Historical Background
The idea of establish a private university to support private sector development in Thailand and the region was initiated in 1996 by Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra and Professor Dr. Purachai Piumsombun. This was followed by the design development of an environmentally friendly campus by Dr. Soontorn Boonyatikarn in 1997. A year later, the innovative plans were presented to Her Royal Highness Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn, and then to the Ministry of Universities which granted the license towards the end operating of 1999.
The first Shinawatra University Council Meeting was held on May 19, 2000, marking the initial milestone of a long road to become an accomplished private university. In September 2002, the first batch of students was admitted, and the venture of creating and nurturing a prospective university has begun.
Brief Historical Development
- 1996 The idea of establishing a private university to support development in Thailand and in the region was initiated by Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra and associates.
- 1999 The Ministry of Universities Affairs granted a license for setting up Shinawatra University (SIU).
- 2000 The first meeting of Shinawatra University Council (SUC) held its first meeting on May 19.
- 2001 Master degree program in business administration and bachelor degree programs in Built Environment, Business Administration and Computer Science were approved by SIUC
- 2002 Teaching at SIU commenced in September with bachelors degree programs in Built Environment, Computer Science, Business Administration and a master degree program in business administration.
- 2004
- Floors 15 & 16 of Shinawatra Tower III Building were approved by SIUC for graduate operation of SIU
- Master-degree programs in Information Technology, Management Technology,System Engineer and in Management were approved by SIUC.
- First graduation ceremony was held for master of business administration.
- 2005 Bachelor degree programs in Architectural Technology and Management Techonlogy and doctor of philosophy in Technology and in Management were approved by SIUC
- 2006 Graduate ceremony was held for the first batches of bachelors of business administration, computer science, telecommunication engineering and masters of science in information and management technology
- 2007 The first batch of Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Architectural Technology graduated.
- 2008
- Master’s degree program in Teaching English as an International Language and Bachelor’s degree program in Liberal Arts were approved by SIUC.
- Education Standards of SoM, SoT and SIU are unconditionally approved by ONESQA.
